I had a crazy idea last fall to breed one of my Jerseys to a mini Highland bull. I’ve wanted a little fluffy cow of my own and thought why not raise one myself.

I found a bull and had to straws shipped to the farm. Lo and behold, the heifer I bred settled, and nine months of waiting was nothing short of a challenge. Will it be a boy or a girl? Will it be black like Papa or brown like Mama or a combination of both? Oh, the anticipation was a challenge.

Finally, Mama moved into the calving pen, and I watched her like a hawk, checking her several times a day. Then, one morning, she seemed to act a little different, separating herself from the other cows and not up to the bunk eating. Of course, I had to run to town, but I alerted everyone in the farm to watch her closely. I hadn’t been gone for more than a half hour, and a text message came across my phone: “He’s here.”

A healthy baby boy, super fuzzy, with black hair and brown highlights, cute as can be. The long-awaited arrival of my little project was well worth it as I snuggled his adorable little fluffy face.
