The county fair has been the highlight of my summer for as long as I can remember. We would go every year as a family and spend the whole day there.
My favorite part was seeing all the animals. I used to dream of one day showing there. A few years later, I enrolled in 4-H and was a part of the excitement. My first years in 4-H, I showed dairy goats and then later added horses and other projects. But I never showed cattle.
Now, 30-some years later, I get to watch the same joy and excitement through my son’s eyes. I think he may enjoy it even more than me. He loves raising a steer for the market livestock project and showing his jersey heifers. I think his favorite part about the fair is spending the whole week with his cousins and friends hanging out in the barn.
Another great opportunity this year is my niece entered a March calf in the little britches show. Kids ages 5-8 can exhibit in the show to get a handle on the show-ring experience. I’m pretty sure it’s safe to say she is hooked and couldn’t stop talking about her show-ring debut.
