The cow was one of 32 animals that were provided by area dairy farmers for the 4-H judging contest. The top judges in the day’s contest advanced to the state judging contest, which will be held in Madison in August.

Ten-year-old Conway Krohlow studies a class of Milking Shorthorn cows June 30 at the Area Animal Science Days held at the Clark County Fairgrounds in Neillsville, Wisconsin. Krohlow, is a second-year member of the junior dairy judging team from Columbia County. He lives on his family’s farm near Poynette, where they keep a small herd of elite genetic animals.

Bryce Hughes hoses off a Jersey cow June 30 at the Area Animal Science Days held at the Clark County Fairgrounds in Neillsville, Wisconsin. Hughes and his family operate Sunsett Dairy, where they milk 50 cows near Pittsville. The family practices rotational grazing with their herd of Holsteins, Jerseys, Ayrshires and Milking Shorthorns. Hughes and his mother, Stephanie, volunteered to help prepare cattle for the judging contest. Stephanie also served as a contest official.
