What does this time of year look like on your farm? A person not from a farm asked me this one day, and I had to stop and think because there are two perspectives here: inside and outside. Outside, you will find freshly chopped corn silage all packed in long white bags, bins full of soybeans, a shed full of hay and straw, and fields of corn waiting to be harvested to fill the harvester. The farm is wrapping up for the season, and everything is getting cleaned up.
But inside, well, that's another story because every free minute is spent outside preparing for winter and not spent on housework. There are six loads of laundry waiting to be folded, mail spread out all over the table, dishes unwashed, and who knows the last time the floor has seen a mop. Meals are often packed up in to-go boxes and field-ready. Things are a little out of order inside, which reflects a very busy outside.
Should you decide to stop and visit this time of year, expect to find a farm in full swing of harvest. But if you expect a clean house, come back in the winter; there's a much better chance that things will be in order by then.
