Blog 58

I have mentioned before how much my son loves his birthday — I even wrote a blog on it. But there is one thing he loves even more: a day off school, especially an unplanned one.

The excitement soared through the house as we listened to the message from school that said, "Due to extreme temperatures, school will be closed tomorrow."

Yippee, yahoo! And just when we thought that was all for the excitement, I got a message from my sister asking if her kids could come over for the day because their daycare and school would be closed, too. Well, I am not going to turn down a day spent with my niece and nephew, so I rearranged a few things and planned for them to visit.

I am not a fan of the extreme cold weather, bundling up in layers and looking like the kid from “A Christmas Story,” but a no-school day was so much fun. We spent the day playing, crafting and eating all our favorite treats.

My niece's creativity led us to make menus for her pretend restaurant. You can have a burger for $64 and add fries for $68. Ah, the mind of a 4-year-old. But she did make sure milk made the menu at $3 a glass. So, I may not be able to afford to eat at her restaurant, but at least I can have a glass of milk.

A no-school day turned into a fun-filled, exhausting winter day — but bring on spring!
