Company eyes expansion for mega-dairy farm planned in Adams County
A company building two 4,300-cow dairy farms in Adams County already is planning an expansion of one of the facilities. Officials for Milk Source of Kaukauna expect to finish the New Chester Dairy sometime this spring, said Bill Harke, director of public affairs for Milk Source. Company officials plan to begin building the Richfield Dairy sometime in late 2012 or early 2013.

UW-River Falls Dairy Pilot Plant hires new manager
For the first time in 30 years, the University of Wisconsin-River Falls dairy pilot plant has a new manager. Michelle Farner, a licensed cheesemaker who has worked at two different small Wisconsin dairies, has taken over the responsibilities at the facility. She replaces Ranee May, who managed the operation since it opened in 1982. May retired from her post in early January.

Wisconsin milk production up 3 percent in December
Wisconsin milk production totaled 2.21 billion pounds in De‐ cember, up 3 percent from a year ago. Milk per cow averaged 1,750 pounds, up 45 pounds from last December.

U.S. dairy cows keep producing thanks to a mild winter and expanding numbers. The Agriculture Department's preliminary December data put output in the top 23 producing states at 15.425 billion pounds, up a surprising 2.7 percent from December 2010.
